NBC Bank stands as Tanzania’s most longstanding banking institution, boasting a wealth of experience spanning over five decades. We provide a diverse array of retail, business, corporate, and investment banking, as well as wealth management products and services.
The roots of our bank date back to 1967 when the Tanzanian Government took over control of all financial institutions, including banks. Following amendments to the banking industry in 1991, the institution, then operating as the National Bank of Commerce, underwent restructuring in 1997, resulting in the formation of three distinct entities:
- NBC Holding Corporation
- National Microfinance Bank (NMB)
- NBC (1997) Limited
In 2000, South African financial services powerhouse Absa Group Limited acquired a controlling interest in NBC. Despite this acquisition, the Government of Tanzania retained a 30% stake in the bank, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, acquired a 15% ownership interest. Consequently, the institution was rebranded as NBC Limited, ushering in a new era of banking excellence.
