The Tanzania People’s Defence Force (JWTZ), known locally as Jeshi la Ulinzi la Wananchi wa Tanzania (JWTZ), was established on September 1, 1964, with the primary objective of safeguarding the freedom and territorial integrity of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Vision of JWTZ
To have a small, agile force of leaders and experts equipped with modern weapons and tools, ready at all times to defend the nation of Tanzania.
Mission of JWTZ
To defend the country and protect the interests of the Tanzanian nation, provide assistance to civil authorities, and facilitate the achievement of national and international objectives.
Core Responsibilities of JWTZ
- Protect the Constitution and the freedom of the United Republic of Tanzania.
- Defend the borders of the United Republic of Tanzania.
- Conduct training and exercises to maintain combat readiness at all times.
- Educate the public on national defense activities.
- Collaborate with civil authorities to provide humanitarian aid and rescue services during disasters.
- Promote self-reliance and productivity through the National Service (JKT).
- Participate in international peacekeeping operations.
Recruitment
Anyone wishing to join the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (JWTZ) must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Tanzanian citizen.
- Have at least a secondary education (Form Four) and have passed.
- Be unmarried.
- Be between the ages of 18 and 25.
- Have good character and conduct.
- Be mentally sound and physically fit.
Service Conditions
A soldier will be given a service number upon completing initial training. They will serve the military for an initial period of six years, after which they will work on two-year contracts with the approval of the Chief of Defence Forces.
Officers
The Officers Selection Board conducts interviews for soldiers with at least a Form Six education from various units and recruitment schools. Those who pass these interviews are given the status of Officer Cadet and sent to the Tanzania Military Academy for one year of officer training.
